Viloma 1, 2, 3

DESCRIPTION

Viloma from the root, “loma” meaning hair and “vi” denoting disjunction or negation, means anti-hair, ie against the natural order of things. In viloma pranayama inhalation and exhalation is not a continuous process, but one that is interrupted by several pauses. Compared to climbing up or down a ladder, a pause at each step. All 3 stages are suitable for beginners. It is recommended to be done in a lying down position. Stage 1 is recommended for fatigue, stress, and low blood pressure. Stage 2 is recommended for fatigue, stress, and high blood pressure. Stage 3 brings a feeling of lightness and relaxation to the body and mind.

PROCEDURE – STAGE 1 (PURAKA  INHALATION)

  1. Inhale to the count of 3, then pause, retaining the breathing in a comfortable manner. Again, inhale to the count of 3, then pause. Again, inhale and pause. The process should be repeated until the lungs are completely full. Use no strain throughout the length of the breath and during retention.
  2. Exhale slowly and deeply, gradually releasing the contraction of the diaphragm. This completes one cycle of viloma.
  3. Repeat steps 1-2 for up to 10 minutes. Then breathe normally for several breaths.

PROCEDURE – STAGE 2 (RECHAKA – EXHALATION)

  1. Exhale to the count of 3, then pause, retaining the breathing in a comfortable manner. Again, exhale to the count of 3, then pause. Again, exhale and pause. The process should be repeated until the lungs are completely empty. Use no strain throughout the length of the breath and during retention.
  2. Inhale slowly and deeply, gradually releasing the contraction of the abdomen. This completes one cycle of viloma.
  3. Repeat steps 1-2 for up to 10 minutes.
  4. Breath normally for several breaths.

  1. Inhale to the count of 3, then pause, retaining the breathing in a comfortable manner. Again, inhale to the count of 3, then pause. Again, inhale and pause.   2. Exhale to the count of 3, then pause, retaining the breathing in a comfortable manner. Again, exhale to the count of 3, then pause. Again, exhale and pause. The process should be repeated until the lungs are completely empty. Use no strain throughout the length of the breath and during retention. This completes one cycle of viloma.
  3. Repeat steps 1-2 for up to 10 minutes.
  4. Breath normally for several breaths.
